American Heart Association ACLS EP Advanced Cardiac Life Support for Experienced Providers:

ADVANCED CARDIOVASCULAR LIFE SUPPORT FOR EXPERIENCED PROVIDERS ACLS EP CLASSROOM Certification and training class at Saving American Hearts 6165 Lehman Drive Suite 202 Colorado Springs, Colorado 80918 (719) 551-1222.

In my opinion, this is the best course ever developed by the American Heart Association! It really is a cool course and you'll learn things you hadn't thought about before. Don't be intimated! This is a the greatest course ever developed by the American Heart Association. It's exciting, interesting, and it will be FUN !

To take the ACLS EP Course, each student must have their own provider manual for use before, during and after the class. You must purchase the current provider manual and bring it with you to class. The current provider manual is the 2010 Guidelines.

ACLS EP is the most advanced course offered by the American Heart Association. It was designed to address the critical thinking skills needed by healthcare providers who regularly respond to complex cardiovascular, respiratory and other emergencies, such as physicians and nurses in the emergency and critical care areas and paramedics in prehospital care. This audience should have a mastery of ACLS.

The ACLS EP Course goes beyond ACLS by giving these specialized providers more focus and information to deepen their knowledge around the periarrest, arrest and postcardiac arrest care. In the ACLS EP Course, providers will actively participate in complex case scenarios and apply critical thinking skills to reach a differential diagnosis and rapidly create a treatment plan for the patient.

The goal of the ACLS EP Classroom Course is to improve outcomes in complex cardiovascular, respiratory and other ( metabolic, toxicologic) emergencies by expanding on core ACLS guidelines and encouraging critical thinking and decision-making strategies. Through instruction and active participation in case-based scenarios, learners enhance their skills in the differential diagnosis and treatment of pre-arrest, arrest and post-arrest patients.

ACLS EP has been updated to reflect science from the following:

• 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC

• 2013 American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF)/AHA Guidelines for the Management of ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

• 2012 ACCF/AHA Focused Update of the Guideline for the Management of Patients With Unstable Angina/Non–ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

AUDIENCE

The ACLS EP Course is for seasoned healthcare providers who are proficient in performing BLS and ACLS skills, reading and interpreting ECGs, and understanding ACLS pharmacology and who regularly lead or participate in emergency assessment and treatment of pre-arrest, arrest or post-arrest patients. This audience includes physicians, paramedics and emergency department or critical care nurses.

COURSE CONTENT

ACLS EP teaches the following:

Applying the expanded systematic approach (ACLS EP Survey) to patient assessment, evaluation and management

Cardiovascular Emergencies

Cerebrovascular Emergencies

Respiratory and Metabolic Emergencies

Post—Cardiac Arrest Care

Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology Emergencies

High Quality CPR

Effective communication within a resuscitation team and recognition of the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.

CLASS FORMAT

ACLS EP is a classroom-based, Instructor-led course, featuring case-based scenarios. In learning stations, interactive case-based discussions are facilitated by the ACLS EP instructor. The cases are designed to promote critical thinking and decision-making.

This course is 8 hours long and is significantly more advanced than the standard ACLS Course.

The recommended group size for ACLS EP is 6-10 learners, per one ACLS EP Instructor. There are no skills practiced in ACLS EP. All learners should come to class with a solid foundation in ACLS and ready to be tested in ACLS skills, including CPR AED, bag-mask ventilations and Megacode.

The four core learning stations are:

1. Cardiovascular

2. Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology

3. Respiratory and Metabolic

4. Post—Cardiac Arrest Care

CERTIFICATION

For successful course completion, learners must actively participate in all case-based scenarios and must meet all current ACLS course completion requirements including:

• Pass the 1-rescuer CPR and AED skills test

• Pass the bag-mask ventilation skills test

• Pass the Megacode skills test

• Pass the ACLS Provider exam with a score of 84% or higher

Learners who successfully complete the requirements of the ACLS EP Course will receive an AHA ACLS EP course completion card, valid for two years. Please note, the ACLS EP card supersedes the ACLS provider card.

Before entering an ACLS EP Course, learners are required to have mastered ACLS principles, including proficiency in performing BLS, understanding of the ACLS algorithms, rapid and accurate rhythm recognition and ACLS pharmacology. All learners must successfully pass the ACLS exam before entering an ACLS EP Course. Learners are required to show proof of passing the exam either by submitting their completed exam to the course coordinator prior to the course or bringing it with them to the class.

If you are unable to take the online exams due to internet or computer issues, you can take the written test prior to the start of the class.

FORMAT AND TIME

Course completion time is approximately 8 hours (7 to 7.25 hours without breaks and 8 to 8.5 hours with breaks).

The target audience for this course is registered nurses, nurses working in the Emergency Dept, Cardiac Unit, or Critical Care unit, telemetry or heart monitored unit, paramedics, EMTs and Emergency Personnel as well as physicians, nurse practitioners, those who work in urgent care centers.

The goal of the ACLS EP Course is to improve outcomes in complex cardiovascular, respiratory and other (e.g. metabolic, toxicologic) emergencies by expanding on the core ACLS Guidelines and encouraging critical thinking and decision making strategies. Through instruction and active participation in case based scenarios, learners enhance their skills in the differential diagnosis and treatment of pre arrest and post arrest patients. This course supersedes the traditional ACLS Provider Course.

There are pre-requisites for this course.

You must purchase the provider manual.

You must go online and take the traditional ACLS pretest at www.heart.org/eccstudent and enter the code ‘acls’.

You must then take the 50 question ACLS test online, or written via appointment with the instructor before the class date. You must score at least 85% on the pre test and the ACLS written or online test.

In class you will be tested on 1 and 2 rescuer CPR on an adult with the use of an AED. You will also be tested while being a team leader for a Megacode scenario. There will be no hands on practice in class as it is expected that you are already an experienced provider and are taking this class seeking a deeper understanding of the complex emergencies and to challenge yourself.

All testing is completed before moving on to the ACLS EP course.

Upon completion of all testing requirements you will receive your ACLS EP Provider Card good for 2 years and supersedes the traditional ACLS Provider Card.
